Housing estate - an urban unit characterized by a unified housing development, supplemented with service and commercial infrastructure. The facilities inside the estate are often connected by a network of internal roads, with the separation of higher-class roads outside. The concept of a housing estate was developed in the 1920s in Germany, and spread in other countries after World War II. In some cases, housing estates have one owner, e.g. a housing cooperative, social housing association, etc., in other cases individual elements of housing may have different owners, and the separation of such an area as a separate housing estate may have historical or customary grounds, etc. The term "housing estate" also refers to the auxiliary unit separated within the city (commune). A housing estate understood as an urban unit may also be an "estate" in the administrative sense or part of it.
