It is believed that he was born on December 31, 1491 in Saint-Malo, Brittany. He was in command of an expedition whose main task was to find the northwest route to China. He left Saint-Malo with two ships in April 1534, and twenty days later he sighted Newfoundland. It crossed the Strait of Belle-Isle, between Newfoundland and Labrador, continued in a southerly direction along the western coast of Newfoundland, to border the Gulf of St. Lawrence. He sighted the island of Prince Edward and the lands of New Brunswick, sailed through the Chaleur Bay, baptized by himself with this name, landed on the Gaspé peninsula and crossed the estuary of the St. Lawrence River.
