The arrangement in gray and black No. 1, best known under the colloquial name \ "Whistler's Mother \", is an oil painting on canvas created by American-born painter James McNeill Whistler in 1871. The theme of the painting is Whistler's mother, Anna McNeill Whistler. The image measures 56.81 to 63.94 inches (144.3 cm x 162.4 cm) and is displayed in the frame of Whistler's own design. It is exhibited and kept by Musée d'Orsay in Paris, purchased by the French state in 1891. This is one of the most famous works of an American artist outside the United States. It has been described variously as an American icon [and Victorian Mona Lisa.
