One of the first two African Americans to play in the in the National Football League (NFL). As a player, his stats include sixteen rushing touchdowns, two receiving touchdowns, for a total of 18 touchdowns. He also became the first African American head coach in 1921. He was an APFA champion (1920), a First-team All-Pro (1920), and won a Consensus All-American award in 1916. He founded the Brown Bombers, a football team in Brooklyn that wasn't disbanded until 1938, and also operated a talent agency and performed tax consulting and film and music production. He also published the "New York Independent News" from 1935 to 1942, one of the first black-owned tabloids in New York City.
