Grapefruit (Citrus paradisi) - a species of evergreen plant from the rutaceae family. The grapefruits are likely a hybrid of a giant orange (Citrus maxima) from the Malay Archipelago with a Chinese orange (Citrus sinensis) [2], with Chinese oranges probably also being crosses, albeit much earlier, of these giant oranges with mandarins (Citrus reticulata). Grapefruits were brought and established on the island of Barbados in the 17th century by Captain James Shaddock. The Caribbean region has become the main area of their cultivation. Currently, the plant is grown in many countries of the subtropical zone (including the USA: Florida, California). It gives a yield of 300 tons per hectare.
