It is known as Protestant Reform - or, simply, the Christian religious movement reform initiated in Germany in the sixteenth century by Martin Luther, which led to a schism of the Catholic Church to give rise to numerous churches and religious currents grouped under the denomination of Protestantism. The reform had its origin in the criticisms and proposals with which diverse religious, thinkers and political politicians sought to cause a profound and widespread change in the uses and customs of the Catholic Church, as well as denying the jurisdiction of the Pope over all Christianity; For Protestants the Pope is only the "Bishop of Rome" and the religious doctrines of him will be known as papism and policies as cessaropapism. The movement will subsequently receive the name of Protestant Reform, for its initial intention to reform Catholicism in order to return to primitive or pure Christianity, and due to the importance of Espira protest, presented by some princes and German cities in 1529 against an edict of Emperor Carlos V aimed at repealed religious tolerance that had previously been awarded to German principalities.
