The main characters of the film are the cat family - Duchess' cat and her three lovely children: Marie, Toulouse and Berlioz. Their owner is a rich lady Adelaide, who loves her charges very much. One day, she brings a lawyer home and writes a will that her cats will inherit her entire fortune, and only after their deaths, her property and house will be given to her little intelligent butler, Edgar. Upon learning of the will, he gets rid of the cats, abandoning them in the French countryside. The cat family meets Thomas O'Malley, a self-employed vagabond male, who decides to help them return to their owner. Many adventures meet them on the way home. When they finally reach Paris, the greedy Edgar decides to prevent the cats from meeting Adelaide in their own home. She calls for a truck and wants to send the cat family to Timbuktu. Roquefort, Thomas O'Malley and his friends come to the rescue. As a result of their actions, Edgar is sent to Timbuktu, and the cats return home and the owner.
