It lives in vast forest complexes of north-eastern Europe, the southern part of the Scandinavian Peninsula, the western part of Central Europe, northern Italy, Siberia up to eastern Asia, and the mountains of central and southern Europe (Alps, Carpathians and Sudetes to the upper forest border, mountain ranges in the Balkans). There are 4 [2] to 9 [4] [5] subspecies. In Poland, not very numerous (locally moderately numerous) breeding bird, mainly in the Carpathians, in large forests of the Masurian Lake District, Podlasie and Pomerania. Scattered positions are located in the Lublin region and the Kielce region. It is a rare bird in the mountains, and rarely seen during the breeding season, when it becomes hidden. It is usually seen in the fall when it feeds on hazelnuts. The nesting form here, called the short-billed nut, belongs to the subspecies N. caryocatactes caryocatactes. The second subspecies (the so-called long-billed nutcracker, N. caryocatactes macrorhynchos) inhabits Asia, and it flies invasively to Central Europe from time to time from August to November from the north-east, found outside the breeding season. Birds hibernate in the country.
