It lives in warm tropical and temperate waters of all oceans. It prefers bottom areas, including along continental shelves. Most often found at a depth of 20 to 65 meters, it sometimes lives both in shallower and much deeper waters. Reaches a maximum length of 2.8–3 m and a weight of 90 kg. It has an elongated, massive body with a darker back, a rounded downward curved muzzle with heterodontic dentition.
