In August 1888, Vincent van Gogh began painting a series of paintings, defined by the researcher of his work, Jan Hulsker, as "which perhaps more than any other of his paintings made him famous all over the world, they are often the only works with which he is identified. " This series of paintings is Sunflowers.
The series includes six paintings (the seventh, Still Life : a vase with five sunflowers was destroyed during the Second World War ):
Three sunflowers in a vase (Dr. drie zonnebloemen in een vaas, called Three Sunflowers in a Vase ). Catalog number : F 4539, JH 1559. Currently in private collection in the USA.
Still life : a vase with fifteen sunflowers (Vijftien zonnebloemen in een vaas, Still Life : Vase with Fifteen Sunflowers ).
