Inspector Montalbano (Italian: Il commissario Montalbano [il kommisˈsaːrjo montalˈbaːno]) is an Italian television series based on the detective novels of Andrea Camilleri. The protagonist is commissario (Commissioner) Salvo Montalbano, and the stories are set in the imaginary town of Vigàta, Sicily. The series is produced and broadcast by RAI since 1999 to critical acclaim. In 2012 the series generated a prequel, The Young Montalbano.
Plot
Sicily (Southern Italy ). Inspector (commissioner) Salvo Montalbano, the chief of the state police station of Vigàta, a fictional town in the fictional province of Montelusa (Province of Ragusa), is a gruff character who is responsible and serious at work, but often also open and friendly with people he knows he can trust. Montalbano must investigate various criminal acts in his area which, thanks to his intelligence and the help of numerous assistants, even outside the police, he always manages to solve by reconstructing the exact events. Among his colleagues at the police station are his deputy, Inspector Domenico 'Mimì' Augello, Detective Giuseppe Fazio, officer Galluzzo and the awkward policeman Agatino Catarella. Among his external collaborators are his Swedish friend Ingrid Sjöström (she lives in Vigata), the journalist Nicolò Zito, Dr. Pasquano and, more rarely, Adelina, his cook.
