Stanisław Wokulski - literary figure, protagonist of the novel Bolesław Prus's Doll; Wokulski has become a symbol of entrepreneurship in Polish mass culture. == Biography == Born probably in 1832, he came from an impoverished noble family. Forced by his father, Piotr Wokulski, to work in Warsaw as a shop assistant and waiter in the Hopfer's wine cellar, where he was supposed to learn his profession. There he met Ignacy Rzecki, with whom he lived, which enabled him to take up education. Wokulski first went to the Preparatory School, then to the Main School. He started studying at the mathematics and natural science faculty at the main school in Warsaw. His inventions include: a flying machine model with limited control options, a water pumping machine. He dropped out of school less than a year when the January Uprising broke out. At that time, Wokulski enlisted in the insurgent unit, and as a result he was deported to Irkutsk in Siberia. He returned from it after seven years, in 1870, with a small amount of money, which he gained by acquaintance with the Russian merchant Suzin.
