Farewell and Greeting of the Insurgent ( diptych ) - a diptych of the Polish painter, Artur Grottger, referring to the January Uprising, painted in 1865-1866. The paintings are in the collections of the National Museum in Krakow.

Paintings Farewell to the insurgent and Greeting to the insurgent form part of the national school of historical painting, whose outstanding representatives were also Jan Matejko and Józef Chełmoński. The method of presenting historical events through the prism of scenes taken from life is evident here, accepted by Grottger.

As in the series of drawings by Polonia or Lithuania, Grottger takes up the topic of the January Uprising here.

The circumstances of the creation

Diptych Grottger made in 1866 during his stay in the present Ukrainian village of Śniatynka, which at that time belonged to Stanisław Tarnowski.

Farewell to the insurgent

In the first painting, Farewell to the insurgent, we see a scene where the wife fondly bids farewell to the insurgent setting out for the fight for Poland 's freedom, pinning the national bow to the corner. A man of noble origin is said to be farewell by a Polish woman dressed in mourning black, who for the good of her homeland is ready to give up her personal happiness. Both characters are looking at each other. In the background you can see a branch of Krakus.
