The instrument panel or panel, improperly called the dashboard, of a motor vehicle and a motor vehicle is the instrument for collecting vehicle information.
Structure
The instrument panel is generally composed of two main elements:
Speedometer - Allows you to see the vehicle 's instantaneous speed ; it is mandatory by law
Tachometer - Allows you to see how many revolutions per minute the crankshaft performs at any time In addition to this, there are other elements:
An indicator of the residual fuel
An indicator of the temperature of the engine coolant
A clock
The partial and total odometer ( or odometer ) Some vehicles such as trucks, buses, off- road vehicles and some sports cars usually host additional indicators within the framework deemed useful for the efficient and safe performance of their particular functions:
Engine oil pressure gauge
Engine oil temperature gauge
Differential oil temperature indicators
Gearbox oil temperature gauge
Battery voltage indicator
Pneumatic circuit pressure indicators
Suspension load indicators
Air pressure gauge in the air filter
Turbocharger pressure indicator produced by turbocharger or volumetric compressor
In addition, the on-board computer can be integrated into the instrument cluster.
With the exception of the speedometer and odometer, all other instruments may be present or absent, combined and arranged according to the tradition of the manufacturer, the function and segment of the vehicle and the level of preparation of the same. The odometer is the only instrument always in digital format for reasons of readability, having to show distances that can reach millions of kilometers or miles with high detail and minimal deviation. All other indicators can be digital or analog. Analog instruments can be hand -held or made with other technologies such as liquid crystals. There are cars that use digital displays to show information also in analog format (for example the Mercedes S-Class).
Location
The instrument panel must be immediately readable at all times. On board a motor vehicle it is generally placed behind the steering wheel, but it can also be in the center of the dashboard. On motorcycles it can be integrated into the handlebar or fixed to the most advanced part of the frame.
