Belles-letres - a type of writing (including oral works), which includes all texts with the dominant aesthetic function of a language, i.e. literary works, as opposed to texts of an informative, journalistic, scientific nature, etc. (applied literature). The scope of fiction depends on the criteria in force in a given historical era. The boundaries between such literature and other types of literature (and oral texts), e.g. utilitarian ones, are not easy to be determined by researchers due to the presence of numerous borderland species. The term 'belles-letres' (French belles lettres) was introduced in the first half of the 18th century (in the period of systematizing various forms of writing) as an analogy to the term 'fine arts' (French beaux arts). At that time, the term meant poetic, oratory, rhetorical, epistolary and historiographic prose. The term "belles-lettres" became popular thanks to the treatises of Rollin De la manière d'étudier des Belles Lettres (1726) and Charles Batteux Cours de Belles-Lettres (1747).
