Around 1897, the city authorities allocated a part of the Hospital Square for the construction of a new (third in the order of construction) Catholic temple [2]. The design competition announced in 1898 [3] was won by the company "Wende i Zarske" [3] [4] led by Johannes Wende and Adolf Zarske, who hired the then little-known architect Emil Zillmann.
