Beginnings Kowal was born on February 16, 1931 as Erwin Ernest Schmidt in the Bobrek commune, which after World War II was annexed to Bytom. In 1946, at the instigation of Marceli Strzykalski, he began training at the Odra Bobrek Sports Club, which operated at Huta Julia [a]. Strzykalski characterized Kowal as a boy avoiding coaching football at the club. According to him, Kowal preferred to play with his friends in the courtyards and heaps [2]. In the years 1949–1952 Kowal performed in Steel Bobrek, which was formed after the merger of Sparta and Liniarnia Bobrek [1]. At the age of eighteen, he was prompted by Stal's activists to change the name and surname to mislead representatives of military clubs who wanted to have him at home [3]. In 1952, after a friendly match in Bytom with Wawel, Kraków was called up to the army and delegated to the new team [4].
