The vertebrate skeleton is made of bones (various proteins and mineral salts, e.g. hydroxyapatite) and cartilage (mainly proteins) and various horny products (keratin). Also in cephalopods there is an internal cartilage skeleton. Skeleton arthropods, some amoebas, polychaetes and others it is built largely of chitin (cuticles), sometimes involving minerals such as calcium carbonate (karapax).
