The altar of Isenheim The altar was built in 1512-1515 on the order of the Order of Antonians from Isenheim. The Antonians ran a monastic hospital there, where people with ergotism were treated. It was a disease caused by ergot poisoning that led to tissue necrosis and eventually gangrene in the final stages. The altar was supposed to bring comfort to the sick and the dying. The polyptych has two sets of wings, proper manipulation of them allows to obtain three views, which were originally opened at different times of the year. The first is dominated by the presentation of the Crucifixion. The second view consists of three paintings, the Annunciation on the left, the Birth of the baby Jesus with a concert of Angels in the middle and the Resurrection on the right.
