The name "Ottoman" comes precisely from its Arabic name, "Útman", being "Osmán" a Castilianization of his surname Osmán Gazi was the son of Ertogrul (died around 1280), a military chief in the service of the Sultan Sultan of Rum. He became himself ruler of a small state located in north-western Anatolia, taking the cities of Eskisehir, Bilecik, Yarhisar and Yenisehir from Byzantine hands, and proclaimed himself independent with the title of sultan. In order to extend his dominions, Osman I advanced towards Iznik and Bursa. This last city would be taken by his son Orjän in 1326. From this base, his descendants extended their dominion over Asia Minor and the Balkans and, later, over the entire eastern Mediterranean.
