Amateur career

The palace in 1999 represented the United States at the Pan American Games in Winnipeg. There he won a silver medal in the middle category, losing in the finals to Cuban Yohanson Martínez. In 1999, he won the Golden Gloves tournament in the middle category, defeating Jerson Ravelo in the final. He repeated his success in 2000, beating Terrance Johnson in the middle category. In 1999 he was also the US champion in the middle category. In the final he beat Jeff Lacy.

He did not qualify for the Sydney Olympic Games. At the qualifying tournament for the United States he took 3rd place, beating, among others Jerson Ravelo, Randy Griffin or Julius Fogle.
