The Germanic peoples (or barbarians) had been haunting the borders of the Roman Empire since the 1st century. They were nomadic or semi-nomadic peoples with a stratified society: nobles, free, freedmen and slaves. The king was chosen from a member of the noble families. Freemen swore personal allegiance to the chief, and this was the basis of his power. They are known as barbarians by derivation of the term "barbarian" which means "foreigner" and also because their customs were different from those of Christian peoples, a faith they did not know.
