The city was the capital of the Skierniewice Province in the years 1975–1998. The city is situated in the Vistula river basin, in the Środkowomazowiecka Lowland, in the southern part of the Łowicz-Błońska Plain. It was a clergy town [7] of the Archbishopric of Gniezno in the Rawa Land of the Rawa Province in 1792 [8].
