Nara (Japanese 奈良 市 Nara-shi) - the capital of the Nara Prefecture in the Kinki (Kansai) region on the island of Honshu, near Kyoto. There are monuments inscribed on the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage List. The city, under the name of Heijō-kyō (Japanese 平城 京), was the first capital of Japan and the seat of the imperial court in the years 710–740 and 745–784. After the capital was moved to Heian-kyō (Kyoto), the city became an important monastic center. However, it lost its political significance.
