Zaanstad is a city in the North-West of the Netherlands, in the Province of North Holland, northwest of Amsterdam, on the North Sea Canal. It was established in 1974 by merging the cities of Zaandam, Zaandijk, Koog aan de Zaan, Wormerveer, Krommenie, Assendelft and Westzaan. About 146,000 residents, half of whom live in Zaandam.
