Wolverhampton is a city and district (unitary authority) in the West Midlands, England. The city lies northwest of Birmingham and is the second largest in the West Midlands conurbation. In 2011, the district had a population of 249,470 [2]. The city's western districts, such as Bilston and Heath Town, lie in the district traditionally known as the Black Country. The city is located on the Midland Plateau, at an average altitude of 120 m above sea level. There are no large rivers flowing through the city, however the Penk River, River Tame and Smestow Brook, a tributary of the River Stour, have their sources here. This means that the city lies on the border of one of the largest English watersheds.
