Superior Wisconsin. The first known Europeans who visited this area were the French. In 1618, Étienne Brûlé, a traveler of Samuel de Champlain, went along the southern shore of Lake Superior, where he met Ojibwa. After returning to Quebec, he brought back a few copper specimens and a glowing report from the region. In 1632, Champlain's map was made, representing "Lac Superior de Tracy" as Lake Superior and the lower end as "Fond du Lac". Shortly thereafter, fur traders created positions, and Jesuit missionaries came to conversion and learn from Anishinaabe.
