Superior Wisconsin. The first known inhabitants of Douglas County were the mound builders. These people appeared on the shore of Lake Superior after the last glacier retreated. They mined copper in the Minong Range and in Manitou Falls over the Black River. They drove the metal into weapons, tools and ornaments, some of which were later buried as tombs on the hills with their dead. Their civilization was eventually invaded by other tribes, mainly from the Muskhogean and Iroquois resources, and disappeared as a separate culture in late, prehistoric American times. The best puzzle zone with nature.
