Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg. A city in northern Germany on the federal state near the mouth of the Elbe to the North Sea. A free city and also a German federal state. The largest seaport of the country, a large industrial center (ships, electrical engineering, oil processing, food industry) and financial. In 2011, the city received the title of the European Capital of Purity. The old historic city, mostly destroyed as a result of the allied air raid on 27 July 1943, is surrounded by modern housing estates integrated into forest areas. The historical center of Hamburg is located between the main station and the square Gaensemarkt. The Jungfernstieg street on the Alster river remains the shopping street and the Hamburg promenade.
