Among the buildings of Carcassonne you can find the Basilica of Saint-Nazaire, which dates back to the 10th century, and the present appearance indicates the southern Gothic style. The temple was dedicated personally by Pope Urban II in 1096. Another monument is the castle built in the 12th century by the Viscounts of Trencavel. Its original appearance is not fully known to us, so we have to be content with the imagination of Mr. Viollet-le-Duc. In addition, the town has urban buildings, which partly date back to the Middle Ages.
