Even today, the oldest inhabitants of the Plitvice Lakes region repeat a legend. Long ago, the area was hit by a catastrophic drought. Crops withered, herds died out, and people prayed for rain to no avail. Eventually, their pleas softened the heart of the Black Queen, who appeared in the sky and sent a lightning bolt into the valley, after which it began to rain. It was raining for many days until the streams flowed, the valleys turned green again, lakes and waterfalls formed - which today define the boundary of the Plitvice Lakes National Park.
