Built in the years 1839-1849, according to the design of the English engineer William Tierney Clark. The construction of the bridge was undertaken by the Scottish engineer Adam Clark, whose surname was given to the square between the bridge and the tunnel under the royal castle on the Buda side. The bridge was named after the Hungarian politician István Széchenyi, who gave rise to the idea of building the bridge. Baron György Sina, who financed it, also contributed to its construction. Ost was the first permanent link on the opposite sides of the Danube - Buda and Pest. It was also the first stone bridge on the Danube section within the then Hungarian borders.
