The Benedictine Abbey in Weltenburg is the oldest monastery in Bavaria, founded around 600 by monks from the Order of St. Columbana. It is situated near the Danube gorge, on the northern slope of the Arzberg mountain, close to the ancient Celtic habitat of Artobrig. After secularization in 1803, King Louis I founded the Benedictine parish in Welternburg in 1842, which grew into an abbey in 1913. Work on the construction of the famous baroque church began in 1716 and the entrance hall was completed in 1751. Since the monastery became part of the Bavarian Benedictine Congregation in 1686, figures of angels are painted throughout the church. On the church's hemisphere you can see gilded archangels in stucco: Raphael, Michael, Gabriel (with a rosary) and Uriel with incense.
