The street thief Aladdin lives in Agrabah somewhere in the Middle East. One day he meets Princess Jasmine (Naomi Scott) at the market and falls in love with her at first sight. However, the sultan's daughter can only marry a man in whose veins the royal blood flows, and her hand was promised years ago to Prince Anders - heir to the throne of a distant land, Skanland. Meanwhile, Jafar, the sultan's court sorcerer, has plans of his own for Jasmine: he wants to marry her and seize power in Agrabah. To achieve this, he intends to use the magical powers of a Genie (Will Smith) enclosed in an oil lamp. The magic item is hidden in a cave to which, according to a prophecy, only "a diamond in the rough among people" has access. Jafar believes it is Aladdin and sends him to the cave. The boy accidentally rubs the lamp and releases a genie from it, who is to fulfill his three wishes.
