Tarzan (born John Clayton) is a literary character invented by Edgar Rice Burroughs. The first in a series of books Tarzan of the Apes was serialized in the newspaper in 1912, and appeared as a book in 1914. He then wrote twenty-three more parts. Tarzan was the son of noble Britons who had been planted by rebels on a deserted African island. Tarzan's parents died when he was still an infant. An orphaned human child was taken care of by monkeys. Tarzan grew into a powerful man and more than once displayed above-average physical strength. Subsequent books showed more and more adventures, as a result of which the hero, among others he met his love Jane and found a family in England. There were also numerous followers describing the adventures of Tarzan with whom litigation over copyright was conducted. Many film adaptations have been made. The most famous of them was the classic series with Johnny Weissmuller.
