The plot of Merliah (Barbie) is a Malibu surfer. One day at a competition, the heroine's hair turns pink. She jumps off the surfboard into the water, and there the pink dolphin (Zuma) tells her not to be afraid because she can breathe underwater. The girl doesn't know what's happening to her, so she asks her grandfather for advice. This one reveals a great secret to her - her mother was a mermaid, so she also has some mermaid genes in her. Merliliah is unable to believe it, so she goes to talk to her friends by the seashore. There, the girls meet Zuma - a pink, talking dolphin. Zuma tells Merliah that her mother is still alive and that she was once the queen of Oceans (the city of mermaids), but her sister Eris has taken her throne from her. Dolphin asks Merlliah to help find Calissa (Merliliah's mother) and take Eris from the throne. However, it is not that easy. When Merliah and Zuma arrive at the Ocean, Zuma's friends (the mermaids) help the girl mask her legs. After that, the whole bunch goes to the Oracles who tell Merliah that in order to overthrow Eris from the throne, they need three items: the Celestial Crest, the Fish of Dreams, and Eris' Magic Necklace. So the girls decide to find legendary items.
