The building of this cathedral shows a lot about the citizens' perception of their own grandeur. First they started in 1248 with a gigantic building, to surpass all other churches in the world then, to raise its height above the pyramids; the first building to do so, ignoring the fact that they did not possess the technology to do this, but assumed that when they got there they’ll figure it out. Then, after 300 years, they figured out that they’re not going to figure it out and gave up and just abandoned construction and made fun of it. Then, 200 years forward, they eventually figured it out and continued building, after enquiring in Ulm, a city that also built a cathedral, although much smaller but very high, how high they’re going and then built the Köln cathedral a meter higher than that (and the people of Ulm lied so the Köln cathedral is only the second highest church in the world).
