The forest castle in Freiburg (Germany) is an architectural element of the water supply. In Europe, the development of waterworks intensified from the 16th century. Since their construction and maintenance were expensive, initially only larger cities had waterworks. In parts of Europe, in order to reduce costs, it was the responsibility of the owners of the land through which the pipes supplying water to the entire area ran. As a result, they took advantage of various concessions and benefits. Since the structural elements of the water supply system (pipes, pumps, etc.) were not particularly visually attractive, landowners often enclosed them, creating turrets or mini-locks (approx. 150 cm high) marked with their coats of arms, which hid technical details. photo.
