The Yeoman Wardens were created in 1485 by King Henry VII. Soon after, in 1509, his son Henry VIII moved the royal residence out of the Tower of London, so the body split into two separate groups. Most of the Yeoman guards followed the king, but a small group of 12 guards remained in the tower to maintain the former royal residence, probably for the purpose of keeping it in good condition for the king's eventual return.
