The Roman theater of Mérida is a historical theater built by Ancient Rome in the Augusta Emérita neighborhood, present-day Mérida (Spain). Its creation was promoted by the consul Marco Vipsanio Agrippa and, according to a date inscribed in the theater itself, its inauguration took place around 16-15 BC. C. The main function of the Roman Theater of Mérida was that of a space for leisure and entertainment, where performances of the greatest playwrights of Greek tragedy such as Sophocles or Aeschylus, and the Roman comedies of Plautus or Terence, were staged. To this day, the International Classical Theater Festival of Mérida and musical events such as the Stone & Music Festival are held every year.
