Oberammergau - the Passion of Christ brought the city the greatest fame. It is a world-famous spectacle that has even been entered on the UNESCO list. It is related to the plague epidemic (1634) that hit the city during the Thirty Years' War. The terrified inhabitants of Oberammergau, in order to appease God - to protect them from destruction - swore an oath that they would play the Passion of Christ every 10 years in exchange for God's Grace. On the day of Pentecost, "The Art of the Suffering, Death and Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ" was presented for the first time. The stage was set in the cemetery over the fresh graves of those who died of the plague. Oberammergau is characterized by the way of decorating the façade (lüftmalerei), which consists in painting on the walls not only traditional decorative elements, such as beams, columns, frames or biblical and floral motifs, but also creating the illusion of additional windows, balconies, stairs or doors.
