Warrnambool - a city in the state of Victoria, Australia. The popular Great Ocean Road ends in the city. Warrnambool is located 265 km (3 hours by car or train) west of Melbourne on the Princes Highway. During the winter season (July and August), you can watch the whales (southern whales) near Logan's Beach, which come every year to give birth here. The city includes Middle Island - the island of penguins. Once upon a time, small penguins inhabited the entire southern coast of Australia, incl. also Middle Island. The foxes brought to the continent in the 19th century have almost completely wiped out the small penguin population. In 2005, only 10 of these birds were counted on Middle Island. The fact that there may be hundreds of them back on the island after ten years is due to a farmer, Allan Marsh, and his Maremma Sheepdog, Ben. Marsh got approval from the state environmental agency on and trained Ben, or rather his daughter Oddball, to guard the penguin colony. The project was successful and today the penguin colony has just over 200 individuals, and the birds are no longer endangered, but are still under protection.
