Las Lajas Basilica is a Colombian basilica built in the years 1916–1949 on the border with Ecuador, in the Guaitar River canyon. The basilica is situated on the bridge over the canyon. According to legend, in 1754 in a mountain canyon near the city of Ipiales, the Mother of God appeared to a little deaf-mute girl and her mother. After that, the child would regain speech. In the cave where this happened, a painting of Mary carrying a child was later discovered. According to the studies at that time, the painting was not made with the use of known paints or pigments. The first chapel in this place was founded by the blind brother Juan de Santa Gertrudis Serra. In the years 1916–1949, a neo-gothic building was erected on the site of the chapel. The name of the basilica comes from the "laya" sedimentary rock on which the image of Mary was found. Las Lajas Basilica is one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in South America.
