Majolica - ceramics covered with opaque lead-tin glaze with rich colors. A kind of earthenware produced in Italy from the 14th century to the 17th century. Majolica was mainly used for richly ornamented dishes. The production of majolica developed under the influence of Moorish-Spanish pottery, imported to Italy by Majorca (hence the name). In the 15th century, production also began in Florence (majolica sculptures were introduced). At the beginning of the 16th century, the istoriato (narrative) style developed, i.e. decorations with mythological, historical and biblical scenes. The painters of this style were usually outstanding artists, and they looked for inspiration in the works of Raphael and his students.
