[1] [2] [b], also: Sphere for Plaza Fountain [4] [c] and Koenig Sphere [5] [d] - outdoor bronze sculpture, located out in Liberty Park in New York City. It was designed and made by the German sculptor Fritz Koenig in 1968–1971 as part of the fountain situated in the center of the square between the twin towers of the first World Trade Center complex. The sculpture, considered the most famous work of Koenig [2] (he called it his "greatest child" [6]) stood there until the attack on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, which survived as the only work of art in the World Trade Center, suffering serious damage from debris falling from two collapsing towers.
