A series of sixteen oil paintings by the American painter Cassius Marcellus Coolidge, commissioned in 1903 by Brown & Bigelow for a cigar advertising campaign. All images in the series depict anthropomorphized dog figures, however, only nine of them, with animals sitting around a card table, have gained widespread recognition in American culture. The whole series of Coolidge's paintings owes their considerable popularity to the title. To this day, they function as a stereotypical example of poor taste in interior decoration, dominating mainly among the working class.
