Island in Europe from the Netherlands and Belgium, through southern France, the Apennine Peninsula and Greece to Asia Minor. It winters in the basins of the Mediterranean and Black Seas, on the coasts of the Iberian Peninsula, northwest Europe and northwest Africa. There are no subspecies [5] [6]. In the past, some people considered the relict gull (Ichthyaetus relictus syn. I. melanocephalos relictus) to be a subspecies of the black-headed gull [5].
