Ruby Lore [4] (Vini kuhlii) - a species of small bird from the Eastern parrot family (Psittaculidae). Described by Nicholas Aylward Vigors in 1824. It occurs on the Rimatara island in the Tubuai archipelago (French Polynesia) and on the three Kiribati islands (Teraina, Tabuaeran and Kiritimati), where it was probably introduced by the Polynesians [3]. It is in danger of extinction. In order to protect the species, some individuals were moved from Rimatara Island to Atiu - one of the Cook Islands. Fossil studies indicate that this species of parrot has historically been widespread in the South Pacific islands, from the Cook Islands to French Polynesia. There are no subspecies [2] [5].
