During World War I, he joined the army (as a volunteer) and took part in hostilities. In the years 1919-20 he studied at the Bauhaus in Weimar, incl. philosophy and history of art. His teachers were, among others Wasilij Kandinskij, Johannes Itten, Oskar Schlemmer, Gerhard Marcks. In 1925, he took over the leadership of the sculpture class at the School of Artistic Crafts in Szczecin at today's pl. Kiliński. In 1937, as part of the fight against "degenerate art", he was dismissed by the Nazis from this post. He participated in World War II, after which he settled in Alfeld and lectured at the local Higher School of Art.
