Forest okapi [3] (Okapia johnstoni) - a species of mammal from the giraffe family inhabiting central Africa. The only representative of the genus Okapia. Although it has zebra stripes, it is most closely related to the giraffe. Living exclusively in the Ituri forests in the Northeast of the Democratic Republic of Congo, it was only known to the local population until 1900, when it was discovered by Europeans. The name comes from the language of the African Mbuba tribe. Since 1932 the forest okapi has been under protection.
